For many, August is vacation month, but if you want to take action, we've got plenty of suggestions for things you can do, here at home or wherever you may be traveling this summer. Want to protect immigrants or reproductive rights here in Massachusetts? Support election security or share your thoughts on impeachment? Help get out the vote in Florida or Maine? Flip the congressional seat in NC09? We can help with all those things and more!
PROTECT IMMIGRANTS Thank you to everyone who attended the Lights for Liberty vigils earlier this month! It's important to stand up and protest the conditions at the detention camps, but vigil organizers, including those in Boston and Lexington, also stressed the need to take action to protect immigrants in our communities, such as asking our state legislators to pass two key bills.
TUESDAY, JULY 30
DRIVING FAMILIES FORWARD LOBBY DAY
Lobby your state legislators to support An Act Relative to Work and Family Mobility (H.3012 and S.2061). This legislation would enable all qualified state residents to apply for a standard Massachusetts driver’s license, regardless of immigration status, while keeping our Commonwealth in full compliance with REAL ID requirements. Get more details about the lobby day here.
Minuteman Indivisible is proud to partner with more than 100 other organizations in the Safe Communities Coalition to help get this important legislation passed. We've held lobby days, organized rallies, and now it’s time for our state legislators to act. Please call or email your State Reps and Senators and ask them to work to get this legislation passed. Even if they’re cosponsors, they need to hear from you! Tell them it’s a priority this session, and they need to act!
DEMAND THE SENATE PROTECT ELECTION SECURITY
This past week, Robert Mueller testified that Russia is still trying to influence our elections and the Senate Intelligence Committee released a report showing that Russian hackers tried to access election systems in all 50 states, yet Mitch McConnell still refuses to bring election security bills up for a vote.
Last month, the House passed these bills to protect election security:
The SAFE Act, which specifies protocols that secure elections.
Appropriations bill HR3351, which allocates money for the states to fund secure election infrastructure (among many other budget items).
Demand Senators pass these bills - here's a sample script. Even if Mitch McConnell kills the SAFE Act, support for it helps influence state-level officials (who control election systems) to adopt the security measures in the bill. Also, because the second bill is an appropriations bill, it can be passed despite interference from McConnell as long as at least two Senate Republicans join the Democrats in supporting it
Have friends or family who are constituents of GOP Senators (esp. Senators Murkowski-AK, Rubio-FL, & Lankford-OK and Senators up for re-election in 2020) Ask them to contact their Senators and use this scriptto help pass appropriations bill HR3351.
TELL US HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT AN IMPEACHMENT INQUIRY
A majority of the MA congressional delegation have now come out in favor of an impeachment inquiry, including Katherine Clark. Indivisible National also supports opening an impeachment inquiry; when they surveyed members last month, 80% favored starting an impeachment investigation. And on Friday July 26, the House Judiciary Committee announced it would be filing a petition to get the grand jury testimony from the Mueller investigation because “the House must have access to all relevant facts to consider recommendation of articles of impeachment.”

HELP GOTV IN SARASOTA COUNTY, FL
We're joining with our allies at Swing Left Greater Boston to reach out to 31,000 registered Democrats in Sarasota County who didn't vote in 2018. Want to help turn this county blue? Join us from 10:00am to noon in Wayland at a house party hosted by Jean, one of our Steering Committee members, stocked with drinks, snacks, and friendly volunteers to customize, address, and stamp postcards. You can contribute stamps or make a contribution to defray mailing costs. Get more details and RSVP here.
HELP DEMOCRATS iN MAINE!
The hard work to unseat Susan Collins is underway, and Democrats in Maine need our help! Swing Left Greater Boston has made it easy for us to get involved. Grab some friends and drive up to southern Maine for a half-day of canvassing or to help register new voters. If you aren't able to drive to Maine to help with these efforts, the Maine Dems are fundraising to hire year-round field staff, and could use any amount you're able to donate. If you want to get updates on all the local efforts to unseat Collins, be sure to sign up for the SLGB newsletter.
HAVE A WHALE OF A TIME AT THE STATE HOUSE
Join us next Monday, July 29 from 12-2pm at an event hosted by State Rep Fernandez and State Senator Cyr about the North American Right Whale. There will be a life-size inflatable NARW in the Hall of Flags! After a short presentation, there'll be opportunities for photos. Fernandez and Cyr will be presenting the resolution passed by the House and the letter of record written by the Senate to the International Fund for Animal Welfare and the NE Aquarium. There will also be copies of One Special Whale: The Story of Kleenex available, a book that was written and illustrated by fifth graders at a public elementary school in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Want to meet up with the other MI members who plan to attend? Email us and we'll be in touch.
HELP PASS THE ROE ACT
Minuteman Indivisible is part of the statewide ROE Act Coalition. Last month, MI members joined fellow Indivisibles and hundreds of others in Gardner Auditorium and the Great Hall of Flags at the State House for a hearing on the ROE Act that lasted over 10 hours. Now we need your help to get the bill reported out of committee favorably! Opponents are well organized and even legislators who have cosponsored the bill need to hear that they have their constituents' support. Here's what you can do:
Send postcards to our legislators and/or fellow MA residents asking them to support the ROE Act. We'll have postcards at our meetings this month or you can email us to get postcards to fill out on your own.
Speakers from the “Bad Old Days Group,” sharing stories about life before Roe v. Wade
Education on the ROE Act and how it improves abortion access in Massachusetts
Letters to the editor
Calls to our State Legislators
Volunteer for other ROE Act Coalition actions (including phone banks on July 29 or making calls from home over the next two week). Sign up here.
HELP BUILD SUPPORT FOR RANKED CHOICE VOTING
Minuteman Indivisible members joined over 300 Ranked Choice Voting supporters at the State House on July 16 to ask our legislators to support choice voting in Massachusetts. In addition to meeting with our legislators and their staff, we connected with fellow supporters in Lexington and Arlington. Join our effort to get RCV passed by:
Attending a call party in Arlington on August 6 to reach out to RCV supporters and encourage them to volunteer for specific actions! RSVP here.
DON'T FORGET ABOUT CHARLIE BAKER
Who's driving the bus? State Police doctoring overtime sheets. RMV tossing warning letters from other states. MBTA providing terrible and unsafe service. There doesn't appear to be anybody driving the bus. It is time to start calling Governor Baker. The most recent issue is that the Baker administration refused to produce documents or make certain officials available to testify at a legislative oversight hearing into the scandal-plagued Registry of Motor Vehicles, before relenting and agreeing to have the officials testify at a rescheduled hearing next Tuesday, July 30. Tell the Governor that this behavior is unacceptable and, like it or not, he's responsible for actions of his administration Here's his number: (617) 725-4005.
LET'S FLIP NC-09!
Congratulations to all the NC09 postcard writers who answered the call from our fellow Indivisibles in NC09 to remind voters about the special congressional election this Sept. between Dan McCready and the guy who authored the infamous bathroom bill! Massachusetts just sent 10,000 postcards to NC to help get out the vote and our members contributed almost 2,000 of those! Now the special election is just weeks away and Dan McCready needs all the help you can give - the latest poll has the race at a dead heat.
Ready to do more? Come to our next Activism Evening on August 12 (see details above) to learn how to phone bank and text for Dan. Bring your laptop and phones and a headset.
