Amy is an inspiration to all!
"When I was a young girl growing up in Kentucky, I dreamed of being a fighter pilot. Women couldn't do that then. Women couldn't do a lot of things. But society changed, laws changed, and I was privileged to attend the Naval Academy. Four long, tough years later I was commissioned as an officer in the United States Marine Corps, and my dream to serve as an F/A-18 fighter pilot came true. But the Academy and the Corps did more than teach me to fly, they instilled values, a desire to serve my country and a code of conduct I will never forget: honor, courage, and commitment. I have lived that code for more than 24 years."

A Vulnerable Incumbent |
Amy attended the United States Naval Academy and graduated in 1997 with a B.S. in Political Science. She was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps, where she went on to complete flight school first as a Weapons Systems Officer, and later as a pilot in the F/A-18 Hornet. She completed a tour flying missions in Afghanistan in 2002, becoming the first female Marine to fly in an F-18 on a combat mission, and a second combat tour flying in Iraq in 2003.
In 2009, Amy married U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Erik Henderson and both were later deployed to Afghanistan. They now have three children. In 2011, Amy was assigned to Washington D.C. as a Marine Corps Congressional Fellow, serving as defense and foreign affairs policy advisor to Rep. Susan Davis of San Diego. She then served in the Pentagon as the Marine Corps' liaison to the State Department. Having reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, Amy's last assignment was teaching at the U.S. Naval Academy. Amy retired from the Marine Corps on June 1, 2017 after 20 years. https://www.amymcgrathforcongress.com/bio/ |
Garland Hale "Andy" Barr IV is an American politician and lawyer who has served as the United States Representative for Kentucky's 6th congressional district since 2013. He was born and raised in Lexington, KY and comes from a prominent Lexingtonian family. He has spent most of his adult life in politics. In 2012, Barr unseated Democratic incumbent Ben Chandler with significant backing from the National Republican Campaign Committee. In 2016, Barr defeated Democrat Rev. Nancy Jo Kemper by over twenty points in the Trump landslide in the state. Barr has rewarded the Republican efforts by voting along party lines. In this most recent Congress, Barr has voted in line with Trump’s position 93% of the time.
In this majority Democratic district, Barr could be vulnerable. He has voted to repeal the ACA and supports the current Republican tax plan. These votes will be significant in a poor state, with higher unemployment than the national average (ranking #45 in the country), and a district with 30% Medicaid enrollment. Barr’s close alliance with the party establishment (he is widely considered Mitch McConnell’s protégé) may hurt him in a district that is tired of "politics as usual." |
